we're [finally] not in kansas anymore.

Dude, Kansas is flat. And big. This is what we learned today. So big, in fact, that it was the only state that we were in all day until the last couple of hours in Colorado. Meaning that we only had the responsibility of photographing one state sign today... and would you believe that we missed it?! But we promise to find a way to take it tomorrow as we depart Colorado on our way to the Grand Canyon.

We did, however, stumble upon The Oasis... a tropical truck stop paradise about 6 hours into our drive, which cousin Cheryl recommended we stop. Boy, are we glad we did. In addition to palm trees in the middle of farm country, we found the mecca of "Wizard of Oz" memorabilia that we'd been hoping for.

We were excited when Denver popped up ahead of us (quite literally with the Rockies), and have had a wonderful evening with another one of dad's cousins and her family. We had a fabulous dinner on the outdoor patio with Stephanee, her husband Dan, their 3 daughters and 2 son-in-laws. It was so much fun catching up with family members that I haven't seen for as long as I can remember. We are stuffed full of delicious food (and can't wait for the french toast and fresh peaches that they've promised for the morning), and the bed we are laying in now literally feels like a cloud. This should lead to peaceful sleep and sweet dreams.

Loooong day of driving ahead for tomorrow (the Grand Canyon is quite a hike from here!), but we're looking forward to gorgeous scenery along the way. Thanks for stopping by, and feel free to leave us some comments to keep us entertained on the road! :)

Things we noticed today:
-Kansas is the home of the world's largest prairie dog and the world's smallest donkey (36'' long). Sadly, we did not stop to see these treasures.
-We think it'd be nearly impossible to get a speeding ticket on the stretch of I-70 that we drove today. The speed limit is 75 (who can really drive much faster than that?!), there is almost no one on the road, and it's so flat that you can spot a cop car about 2 miles before approaching it.
-We might want to consider not stopping at McDonald's anymore, as we have had altercations with employees at both of the ones we've ventured to. If only LA hadn't discovered that their sugar free vanilla latte is much tastier than the Starbucks version!
